Whole School Curriculum

Whole School Curriculum map 2023

Curriculum Intent

At Hurst Hill we aim to provide a creative, inclusive and real-world curriculum based on our school values and vision.

Our curriculum is the beginning of a long and exciting journey that will bring personal achievement and resilience.

Curriculum Information

Our children follow the National Curriculum and learn to read through the Little Wandle phonics programme.

Children attend collective worship every day and are addressed by visiting speakers as well as school staff. Every class takes an assembly on two occasions during the year focusing on an aspect of their year group curriculum in order to showcase their learning. Parents are warmly welcomed to these events. (These will resume face to face when COVID restrictions are lifted)

Religious Education is taught as a stand-alone lesson every week following the agreed Dudley R.E. Syllabus.

We follow our own topic based curriculum. Each subject is taught separately but links made through the topic. The curriculum is enhanced and expanded through educational visits, creative events and specialist visitors. The computing curriculum is taught once per week in 'Technology Central' and there is another session timetabled once per week for each class to apply their skills through the wider curriculum.

In Reception our children follow the 2021 Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.

“The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the statutory framework that sets the standards that all Early Years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children are ready for school and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.” (DfE 2013)

In Key Stage One and Two, the core subjects of English and Maths are taught in mixed ability classes.

Our Curriculum Subject Intent

Design Technology

Design and Technology at Hurst Hill prepares children to take part in a rapidly changing world. The subject encourages children to become autonomous and creative problem solvers both as individuals and as part of a team. It enables them to identify needs and opportunities and to respond to developing ideas and making products and systems. They will reflect and evaluate their work considering the aesthetic, social and environmental issues. Design Technology will help children at Hurst Hill become discriminating and informed consumers.

Music

To develop in each child a passion for music through singing, playing, composing and performing. For each child to have the opportunity to develop the skill of playing a musical instrument and for them to be able to perform with confidence to a wider audience throughout their primary school career.

To develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

To nurture the curiosity of children to critically analyse the processes of the natural world, enabling them to develop the aspirations and skills needed to succeed now and in the future.
