Phonics at Hurst Hill Primary School

At Hurst Hill Primary School, we are passionate about developing confident, fluent and enthusiastic readers. We believe that reading is the key to unlocking learning across the curriculum and is an essential life skill that enables children to become successful, independent learners.

To teach early reading and phonics, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. This systematic and high-quality approach ensures that children build their phonics knowledge progressively, enabling them to read with increasing accuracy, fluency and understanding.

Through daily phonics lessons, children learn to:

Recognise and say the sounds that letters represent.
Blend sounds together to read words.
Segment words into sounds for spelling.
Develop confidence and enjoyment in reading.
	Build fluency and comprehension skills.

Children are regularly assessed to ensure they are keeping up with the programme. Any child requiring additional support receives timely intervention to help them become successful readers as quickly as possible.

Reading Practice Sessions

Alongside daily phonics lessons, children take part in regular reading practice sessions using books that are carefully matched to their phonics knowledge. These sessions focus on:

	Decoding words accurately
	Reading with fluency and expression
Developing understanding of what has been read

Supporting Your Child at Home

We recognise that parents and carers play a vital role in developing a love of reading. We encourage families to read regularly at home and to celebrate every step of their child's reading journey.

Little Wandle provides a range of helpful resources, videos and guidance for parents, including information on pronunciation, blending and supporting reading at home.

👉 Visit the Little Wandle Parent Resources page for videos, guidance and practical support.

Together, we can help every child become a confident, lifelong reader.
