Maths Curriculum

Introduction to the Teaching of Mathematics at Hurst Hill Primary School

At Hurst Hill Primary School, our mathematics curriculum is built on a mastery approach. We believe that every child can succeed in maths and develop confidence, fluency, and enjoyment in the subject. This reflects the principles outlined by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (2022), which states that “mathematics teaching for mastery assumes everyone can learn and enjoy mathematics” and highlights the importance of teachers continually strengthening their subject expertise.

Our curriculum follows a carefully sequenced, progressive structure. Each year group focuses on mastering age‑appropriate concepts, ensuring pupils develop a secure understanding before moving on. As children revisit and apply their learning across related topics, they build strong mathematical connections that deepen knowledge over time. This layered approach allows every child to grow as a confident and capable mathematician throughout their journey at Hurst Hill.

Our approach is underpinned by the expectations set out in the Department for Education’s Teachers’ Standards (2011), which emphasise that teachers put children’s education first, uphold the highest professional standards, maintain strong and up‑to‑date subject knowledge and work closely with families in the best interests of every pupil.

At Hurst Hill, these principles shape not only what we teach, but how we teach. Through high-quality instruction, a consistent mastery structure and a commitment to supporting every learner, we aim to provide all children with the mathematical skills and understanding they need for future success.

To establish and maintain high expectations and consistency of maths teaching, Hurst Hill leaders have created a codified Maths Handbook to explicitly describe how maths should be taught at Hurst Hill. This fully supports new practitioners, early career stage teachers and trainees.
