Religious Education Curriculum
Subject Intent
RE at Hurst Hill is a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich and enquiry-based curriculum designed to deepen pupils’ understanding of religion, belief and worldviews. Rooted in the Dudley Agreed Syllabus and aligned with the National Curriculum, it enables pupils to explore meaning, purpose and moral understanding through the study of Christianity and Islam at its core, while broadening their knowledge of other world faiths and non-religious worldviews such as Humanism. Through progressive learning from Year 1 to Year 6, pupils revisit key themes such as creation, belonging, forgiveness, morality and enlightenment, each time developing deeper thinking and a more mature worldview. The curriculum challenges pupils to think critically about how beliefs influence individuals, communities and cultures, encouraging respect, empathy and reflection. It builds theological and moral literacy through key vocabulary, ensuring pupils can articulate their understanding with confidence. By engaging with diverse perspectives, stories and ethical questions, pupils learn to appreciate difference, value shared human experiences and consider how they can make a positive difference in society. Ultimately, RE at Hurst Hill equips pupils with the knowledge, compassion and curiosity needed to understand the world around them and live respectfully within it.
RE is taught in all year groups following the Dudley agreed syllabus.
Right to Withdraw from Religious Education (RE)
In line with statutory requirements, Religious Education (RE) is taught to all pupils as part of the school curriculum. However, parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE, if they wish.
If you are considering withdrawal, we encourage you to contact the Headteacher to discuss your request. This helps us ensure we understand your wishes, explain how RE is taught in our school, and make suitable arrangements for your child. We fully respect and support the rights of parents and carers in this matter, as set out in the Education Act 1996 and School Standards and Framework Act 1998.
